We employ traditional Japanese methods in the creation of kanzashi. Our hair ornaments are made of silk cloth and are hand-dyed. The silk is starched to the stiffness of paper and cut into small square pieces. Each piece is hand folded into a single petal using sharp tweezers and “pinched” in the traditional tsumami method similar to folding origami. The petals are aligned on a flat board which is covered with our recipe of rice glue. Each silk petal is mounted on stiff card stock and carefully shaped into a desired form. Silver wire is used to support the flowers, which are gathered into a lovely bouquet. Handcrafting hair ornaments in this fashion is time-consuming and labor-intensive. However, it is our pleasure to employ such traditional methods to enable the creation of exquisite, finely-detailed kanzashi.
This is a two-piece kanzashi set. The main piece is composed of six red and four white plum blossoms. There is a pearl mounted on a gold bell cap at the center of each flower. Dangling gracefully below the bouquet are three rows of 69 petals on the shidare (falls). It is mounted on a 10 cm (4") silver-plated hairpin. The smaller piece is composed of four matching plum blossoms mounted on a 5 cm (2 inch) silver comb. Worn together, the two pieces emulate a traditional lovely kanzashi set worn by maiko in Japan.
